How to Wallpaper a Half Wall With Panelling or a Dado

How to Wallpaper a Half Wall With Panelling or a Dado

Choosing the height, fitting the panelling before the paper, trimming a clean line onto the rail, and why half-height papering often halves the roll count

Fit and finish the panelling first, then paper above it, trimming the paper down onto the top edge of the rail. Choose a height of about one-third of the wall, and expect the roll count to fall by roughly half, which is what makes a considered paper affordable in a room you would otherwise not paper at all.

Choosing the height

Three heights work, and one does not.

  • Dado height, around 90cm to 110cm. The traditional position, roughly one-third up the wall. Suits hallways, dining rooms and period houses.
  • Two-thirds height, around 150cm to 170cm. Panelling dominates and the paper reads as a band above it. Strong in a small room, and effective with a bold design.
  • Picture-rail height. Paper the wall and use the rail as the stopping point, painting above it to the ceiling.

What rarely works is halfway. A rail at exactly half the wall height divides the room into two equal bands and looks accidental. Aim for a third or two-thirds.

Where a room has a window, look at where the sill falls. Aligning the rail with the sill line usually looks deliberate; missing it by 5cm never does.

The order of work

  1. Fit the panelling or rail and fill, caulk and sand it.
  2. Prime and paint it and let the paint harden.
  3. Prepare the wall above as normal, filled, sanded, washed, dust-free, with any new emulsion cured for thirty days.
  4. Mark your plumb line on the wall above the rail.
  5. Paper down onto the rail, creasing along its top edge and trimming there.

Doing it this way round means the paper's cut edge sits on a straight, painted timber line rather than on plaster, which is far easier to make neat. It also means paint cannot splash onto new paper.

Trimming onto the rail

  1. Let the length run past the rail.
  2. Crease firmly into the angle where the paper meets the top of the rail or the moulding.
  3. Cut along the crease against a broad knife with a fresh blade.
  4. Wipe any paste off the paintwork straight away with a clean, slightly damp white cloth.

If the rail has a shaped moulding, crease into the deepest part of the profile, because that is where the eye expects the line to be.

How much paper you'll need

Measure from the top of the rail to the ceiling, not from the skirting, then calculate as normal. A 2.4m wall with a dado at 1m leaves 1.4m of papered height, and a 48cm repeat gives a cut length of 1.44m, which is six drops from a roll rather than three.

In other words, half-height papering can genuinely halve the number of rolls.

Choosing a design for a half wall

  • A large-scale design loses its structure when only a metre of it is visible. Look at the repeat: if the pattern height is close to the papered height, you will see only one band of the design.
  • Smaller repeating designs, stripes and textural papers hold up well above panelling.
  • Order an A3 sample and hold it at the actual height it will sit. A design looks quite different at chest height from the way it looks at eye level.

Colour, and the reason this works

Panelling below and paper above only reads as one idea if the two are related. Take a colour out of the design for the panelling, where the deepest tone in the paper usually works, or have the design recoloured to sit with a paint colour you already have. Every design can be recoloured, which is the whole point of doing it this way rather than hoping two ready-made things get on.

Do I fit the panelling or hang the wallpaper first?

Panelling first, painted and dry, then paper down onto it. The cut edge is neater and the paper stays clean.

What height should a dado rail be?

Around 90cm to 110cm, roughly a third of the wall. Two-thirds height also works. Avoid exactly halfway.

Does half-height papering use less wallpaper?

Considerably. A 1.4m papered height typically gives six drops from a roll instead of three.

Which designs suit a half wall?

Smaller repeats, stripes and textures. Large-scale designs lose their structure when cropped.

How do I get a clean line on the rail?

Crease into the angle, then cut along the crease against a broad knife with a sharp blade.

Can I paper below and paint above?

Yes, and it is worth considering in a room with a low ceiling, because the paper grounds the wall and the plain colour above lifts it.

Lovely pattern and paper quality. However, I wish that I had paid more attention to the roll width measurement. For some strange reason your paper is narrower than a standard roll. This caused me a great deal of problems when papering my lobby, a small area but that made it more difficult because I was left with a narrow space to fill on 3 walls with a very long drop. Although I love the paper I probably wouldn't use it again just for this reason. Why you would produce paper not of a standard width is for you to know and me to wonder but it has made my small project very difficult.

Used this paper to make a dark study cosier. Absolutely loved the colour - the background is a perfect match to our existing panelling painted in Farrow and Ball Old White. First time using paste the wall and it was a revelation so easy and much less mess. Quality of the paper is great but noted the rolls are slightly narrower than most wallpapers. Loved the pattern match which meant little waste what we had left we used to recover some old box files which was easy. I thoroughly recommend.
